BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Jake Bartnik converted a penalty kick early in the second half as Western New England University earned a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's soccer action Saturday (Sept. 21) afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The win was the fourth in the last five for the Golden Bears, who improved to 5-2-0 overall, 1-1-0 in conference play. UNE dropped to 3-3-1 in all matches, 0-2-0 in CCC action.
After the Nor'easters were whistled for a foul in the box in the 56th minute, Bartnik drove a low shot past UNE junior keeper Aidan McParland for his team-leading fifth marker.
UNE would have an opportunity to tie the game late, but a blast by junior Anthony Frangione (Barnstead, N.H.) sailed left of the post.
Big Blue jumped on top early when junior Sean Goodrich punched home a low crossing pass from sophomore Will Bushey 4:09 into the contest.
Western New England knotted the score at 1-all eight minutes later. Senior Alex Mazella sent a cross to first-year Scott Trautwein, who one-timed the pass into the goal from close range.
After Bartnik's conversion gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage, the Golden Bears had another PK opportunity, but McParland stopped the bid to keep the Nor'easters within one.
McParland had a busy afternoon, totaling 11 stops. Senior Domenick Villano had a pair of saves to earn the win for WNE.
The Golden Bears doubled up UNE in shots, 24-12.
Ahead for each team is a non-conference match Wednesday. The Golden Bears take on Wesleyan University at home (4 p.m.), and the Nor'easters head to Lyndon State College (4 p.m.).
