WATERVILLE, Maine -- After capturing sets one and two, the University of New England women's volleyball squad needed a 15-13 decision in a 5th set to secure a 3-2 win over Colby College in a non-league match played Wednesday evening (Sep. 18) at Wadsworth Gymnasium. Scores over the initial four sets were 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, and 14-25.

Winners of three straight, the Nor'easters improve to 6-4 on the year. The Mules drop back to 3-5 overall.

Going the distance...

After UNE's 3-2 victory at Colby on Wednesday, the Nor'easters are 11-4 in matches that last five sets, dating back to the end of the 2010 season.

Big Blue never trailed in the closing frame, which ended on a service error by Colby.

UNE was led by junior Leah Janelle with 13 kills and a dozen digs. Senior Angie Brunette added 10 winners to go with eight blocks (3 solo). Classmate Maria Kuehl helped guide the attack with 32 assists, and kept 15 points alive with digs.

Defensively, senior Kirsta Adie, sophomore Jalene Kanayurak, and first-year Nikki Mathewson all tallied 20 digs.

For the Mules, Natalie Roy registered a match-best 19 kills, and Anna Clifford had a contest-high 21 digs.

The Nor'easters are now off for a week, resuming next Wednesday (Sep. 25) for their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener at home against Endicott College. First serve goes up at 7 p.m.
