Saint Joseph's picks up non-league win over UNE

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine -- Fabrice Iraduha tallied a pair of goals in the 1st half, providing Saint Joseph's College with enough to defeat the University of New England, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon (Sep. 18) at Westerlea Field.

Following an 0-2-1 start to the year, the Monks (4-2-1) have now won four in-a-row. UNE (3-2-1) took its second straight setback after going unbeaten through its initial four games. It was the first time since the 1998 season that the two teams had met.

Iraduha struck on the first shot of the contest, heading home a cross from the left side off the foot of Zach Johnson with 2:12 gone.

The cushion lasted a little more than 12 minutes, as the Nor'easters pulled even on a goal by junior Sean Goodrich. Classmate Anthony Frangione possessed the ball on the left wing and served one into the box, where Goodrich connected a header into the upper right corner.

With just over two minutes left before the halftime break, Iraduha found the top left corner of the net to put the hosts back in front (2-1).

Both sides had chances following intermission. UNE looked to get back level in the 59th minute, but a shot by sophomore Tyler Garnick bounced off the post. Then, in the 61st minute, Big Blue junior goalie Aidan McParland made a diving stop on a Ralph Houanche shot to keep the deficit at one.

After an evenly played first half, St. Joe's finished the second period with comfortable advantages in shots (10-3) and corners (5-1).

Scott Benner needed to make just one save for the Monks, while McParland recorded two for UNE.

The Nor'easters next host a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) against Western New England University.
