BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Colby College scored both of its goals in a five-minute span around the halftime break, and held on down the stretch to register a 2-1 victory over the University of New England in non-conference women's soccer action Tuesday evening (Sep. 17) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The win is the first of the season for the Mules (1-2), while the Nor'easters (4-3) fell for the first time in four outings.
After an opening 41 minutes that saw limited scoring chances in either direction, Colby junior Amanda Findlay collected a ball on the right side and sent a shot around the UNE goalie that caromed off a defender before finding the back of the net. The visitors maintained the slim margin at the break, despite being out-shot, 8-5.
The lead doubled just over a minute into the 2nd period, as senior Crysti Tsujiura found space in the middle and connected with classmate Annie Papadellis darting into the box on the right side, to where Papadellis placed a low shot inside the left post.
Big Blue continued to battle and push forward, and received a penalty kick in the 86th minute after a foul in the box. Senior
Margaret Palmer stepped up and buried it into the lower left corner to split the deficit in half.
However, Colby managed to kill the last 4:04 on the clock to preserve the decision.
For the Mules, who return home to face Trinity College (Conn.) on Saturday (11 a.m.), junior Emily Brook recorded six saves.
Senior goalkeeper
Gina Iannazzi posted five stops for UNE, while junior defender
Lindsey Monaco cleared two additional shots off the line -- one in each half.
The Nor'easters remain in Biddeford on Saturday (12 p.m.) for the second of their four-game homestand, when Western New England University comes to town for a league match.
