DUDLEY, Mass. -- Senior Scott Palmerino scored the lone goal of the match in the 14th minute to provide the Nichols College Bison with a 1-0 win over the University of New England Nor'easters in a mutual Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer opener on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 14).
In a battle of previously-unbeaten opponents, Nichols improved to 4-0-1 overall, while the Nor'easters suffered their first setback of the season to dip to 3-1-1.
Palmerino's goal came as he got by a pair of defenders and slid a shot under a diving stop attempt by UNE junior goalkeeper
Aidan McParland. The marker was Palmerino's team-leading third tally and snapped a string of 348 minutes, 37 seconds McParland had gone without surrendering a goal, establishing a school record at UNE.
The Bison had the better of the scoring opportunities on the day, forging a 32-6 cushion in shots and forcing McParland into making several big stops.
Junior Jeremy Nash turned aside five shots for the Bison, while McParland had 13 saves on the other end of the field.
The Nor'easters return to the pitch Wednesday (Sep. 18) when they head to Standish to take on Saint Joseph's College at 4 p.m.
