BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bowdoin College received a combined 24 kills from senior Ellie Brennan and first-years Katie Doherty and Erika Sklaver on its way to a 3-0 sweep of the University of New England in women's volleyball action Tuesday evening (Sep. 10) at the Harold Alfond Forum. Set scores were 25-21, 25-12, and 25-19.
Winners of three straight, the Polar Bears improve to 4-1 on the year. With its second setback in-a-row, UNE drops to 2-2 overall.
Brennan led the way with nine kills for Bowdoin, while first-year Quincy Leech fueled the attack with 27 assists. Sklaver, who tossed in seven winners, also registered three of her team's 10 service aces. Doherty added nine digs to her eight kills, and senior Taylor Vail totaled a match-high 12 digs.
Junior Rachel McGahie tied the match-best for kills with nine for Big Blue. Senior Maria Kuehl finished with 16 assists and a team-high 11 digs, while junior Leah Janelle recorded 10 digs.
The Nor'easters led by as many as four (11-7, 13-9) during the 1st set, before Bowdoin rattled off five unanswered points to gain the advantage. Ties at 14-all and 15-all followed, but the visitors assumed control by claiming the next three points.
Set number two started fairly even until an 11-4 run by the Polar Bears established a nine-point (18-9) lead for Bowdoin.
The Polar Bears were up 8-5 early in the 3rd frame, only to see an 8-1 spurt move UNE to the front (13-9). Bowdoin answered with six consecutive points and never looked back.
Both squads hit the road for tournament play on Friday and Saturday. Bowdoin will be at the MIT Invitational, starting with Springfield College in the first of four matches (Friday, 5 p.m.). The Nor'easters are also playing four matches at the Wildcat Classic hosted by Johnson & Wales University, beginning with Amherst College (Friday, 4 p.m.).
