BOSTON -- Senior Krista Ledin scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over the University of New England in a mutual season-opener played Friday afternoon (Aug. 30) at the Clark Athletic Center Field.
Ledin, who scored 26 goals a year ago, had a goal in each half to tie the Beacons' career record for goals scored. Tayla Andrews and Alli Modzelewski also found the scoring column for UMass Boston.
The Beacons, who won 18 matches in 2012 en route to an appearance at the NCAA Championship, got on the scoreboard in the 19th minute when Andrews put home a corner kick by Brittany Castillo. They doubled their lead less than seven minutes later as Ledin broke in alone and drove a shot into the right corner of the net.
The score remained 2-0 until the 71st minute when Modzelewski converted another feed from Castillo on a corner. Ledin notched her 51st career marker at the 73:01 mark with a shot into the left side of the goal.
UMass Boston held a 21-10 advantage in shots for the match. Goalkeeper Kristen Spain had nine stops to register the shutout.
Senior Gina Iannazzi had 11 saves in 78:47 of playing time for the Nor'easters. Rookie Brielle Robinson played the rest of the way, turning aside one shot.
UNE plays its home-opener next Wednesday (Sep. 4), hosting St. Joseph's College at 4 p.m.
