GORHAM, Maine -- Junior
Amanda Vaudreuil drove in three runs and first-year
Lauren Doneski allowed just two hits to help lead the University of New England to a 9-1 win (5 innings) over the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 9) at Towers Field. The Huskies used a 4th-inning rally to claim game one of the non-conference doubleheader, 8-4.
UNE moves to 12-10 on the year, and USM to 2-18.
After falling short in the opener, Big Blue got right to work in
game two with a pair of runs off a single up the middle by sophomore
Gabrielle LaRoche. First-year
Amanda Vallante and sophomore
Adrienne Chase scored on the two-out hit.
Vaudreuil doubled the margin in the top of the 3rd, driving in junior
Allie Frazier -- who reached with a lead-off walk -- from third. Vaudreuil scored on a wild pitch later in the frame to make it 4-0.
It was in the 4th that UNE took full control. With a 6-0 cushion, Vaudreuil singled home first-year
Meghan Bolano and Frazier, and Chase knocked in Vaudreuil to complete the Nor'easters' scoring.
First-year pitcher
Lauren Doneski did not allow a hit until the bottom of the 4th, and gave up just two over the five innings as she improved to 6-2. The Southern Maine run that was scored in the 4th was unearned against Doneski.
Jesse Hutchins took the loss in the circle for the Huskies.
Big Blue had an even better start to
game one, tallying three runs in the top of the 1st. Junior
Kirstyn Tracey and senior
Casey Brigham reached with a single and double, respectively, and both scored on a single from senior
Erin Grover. Grover later crossed home plate on a wild pitch, and the UNE lead was 3-0.
Southern Maine got two back in the bottom of the stanza, taking advantage of two hits and an error to score on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
The Nor'easters added one (4-2) in the 2nd, as Tracey walked and later scored. UNE threatened to tack on more, but left the bases loaded when the third out was recorded.
USM began the 4th was back-to-back singles up the middle, though had yet to score after two outs. Then, Lillian Cooper singled to drive in one and cut the deficit to 4-3, and Katie Davis and Kristen Duross followed in short order with two-RBI hits to put the hosts up, 7-4.
The inning could have netted more for Southern Maine, too, as the Huskies stranded a runner on every base.
Davis finished going 3-for-4 at the plate for USM, which added one more run in the bottom of the 6th to provide the final margin. Working through a slow start, pitcher Stephanie Stockwell notched her second win of the season in the circle.
Seven different players had hits for UNE, and Grover totaled a team-high two runs batted in. First-year
Chelsea Damon took the loss in 2.2 innings of work. Classmate
Abby Lambert pitched the other 3.1 innings, and fanned four.
Big Blue gets back at it on Wednesday, with a home twinbill against Husson University. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
