QUINCY, Mass. -- Abby Lambert backed up her own strong pitching performance by delivering a two-out single to score Jess Lemos in the top of the seventh, giving the University of New England a 2-1 win over Eastern Nazarene College for a split of a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader Wednesday (April 3) afternoon at Mitchell/McCoy Field.

Behind a two-hitter by Kori Sorenson in the opener, the Lions took a 2-0 shutout.

In game one, Sorenson was dominant, allowing just four base runners in her fifth victory. She walked two and struck out seven. Sorenson did not allow a hit until the fourth inning.

Eastern Nazarene plated a run in the third as Kendra Brasil was credited with a steal of home when she scored after a walk to Olivia Tovar. After reaching first, Tovar tried to advance to second and was thrown out, but Brasil scampered home on the play. The Lions added an insurance run in the sixth when Carissa Cicolini scored on a wild pitch.

Rookie Chelsea Damon (2-3) was a tough-luck loser for the Nor'easters in the opener, She allowed six hits and one base on balls while striking out three. Offensively, Amanda Vaudreuil and Meghan Bolano had UNE's two hits.

The Nor'easters' bats were silent in the early stages of game two until Allie Frazier launched a home run to left-center in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 1-all.

Big Blue pushed home the winning run in the top of the seventh. Gabrielle LaRoche led off with a single down the left-field line and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Megan Gauger. Lemos came on to pinch-run for LaRoche and advanced to third on a groundout by Erin Grover. Lambert helped her own cause with a single through the right side to plate Lemos.

In the circle, Lambert scattered three hits and struck out one to even her record at 3-3.

Eastern Nazarene (6-15, 3-5 CCC) scored its run in the home half of the first on an RBI single by Sterling Marino. Sorenson offered another strong outing in the pitching department, allowing five hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

The Nor'easters (9-7, 3-3) will play their home-opener Saturday when Curry College comes to Biddeford for a noontime doubleheader.
