BRUNSWICK, Maine -- University of New England first-year
Amanda Vallante singled to right field to clear the bases and break a 2-all tie in the seventh inning, and the Nor'easters held off Bowdoin College in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-4 victory in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday (April 25) afternoon at Pickard Field.
Melissa DellaTorre and Tricia Thibodeau combined on a five-hitter to help the Polar Bears earn a split with a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.
The Nor'easters wrap up their regular season with a record of 22-15-1. Bowdoin, which is rated seventh in the New England Region in the most recent NCAA Divsion III rankings, has a 27-11 mark with two regular-season games remaining.
UNE's rode a four-run seventh to victory in
game one. After their leadoff batter was retired, the Nor'easters started their uprising with a single by
Abby Lambert. She moved to second when
Jess Lemos followed with a base hit. Pinch-hitter
Casey Brigham walked to load the bases, then Vallante plated Lambert, Lemos and pinch-runner
Allie Frazier with a two-RBI single that was misplayed. Vallante, who ended up at third on the play, would later come home on a sacrifice fly by
Erin Grover.
The Polar Bears made it interesting in their final at-bat, scoring twice and bringing the tying run to the plate with one out. Lambert got a flyout and a strikeout to silence the threat and earn the victory.
Lambert, who tied the game in the fourth with a bunt, upped her record to 9-4. She allowed 10 hits and one walk while striking out three. Offensively, Vallante finished with two hits at the top of the lineup.
Toni DaCampo had three hits for the Polar Bears, who led 10-7 in that category but were hurt by three errors in the field. Julia Geaumont (10-2) suffered just her second loss with three earned runs over seven innings.
DellaTorre was dominant in the circle, and Gen Barlow had four runs batted in to help the Polar Bears take
game two.
The hosts would get all the offense they would need with a single run in the first on a double by Barlow. They doubled their lead in the home half of the third when DaCampo scored on a wild pitch, then extended the cushion to 5-0 on a three-run homer by Barlow in the fifth.
DellaTorre (12-6) scattered five hits over six innings to record the win. She walked none and fanned six before giving way to Thibobeau, who worked a 1-2-3 seventh frame.
Vallante was the lone repeat hitter for the Nor'easters, who received a double from Brigham and singles by
Amanda Vaudreuil and
Ali Stanley.
Chelsea Damon (5-7) was the pitcher of record for UNE.
The Nor'easters are off until Monday (April 28) when they open play in the double-elimination phase of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship. UNE will face either Salve Regina University or Gordon College at 2:30 p.m. at Endicott College.
