WENHAM, Mass. -- Junior Pat Wolfe scored four goals, including a key insurance goal late, as the University of New England rallied past Gordon College for an 11-10 Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse win Wednesday (April 10) evening under the lights at Brigham Athletic Complex.
The victory extends the Nor'easters' best start in program history, improving their record to 9-3 overall, 3-1 in conference play. UNE has won seven of its last eight starts. Gordon slips to 2-10 (1-4 CCC).
Wolfe's four-goal output pushes his goal total to a team-high 25 for the season. Senior
Tyler Thomas notched his sixth three-goal performance of the campaign, while junior
Mike Allan offered a six-point night with two goals and four assists.
For Gordon, Roger Evans scored four times and Mio Sison twice.
The game was tightly-contested the entire evening. After Gordon raced out to an early 3-0 lead, the Nor'easters tallied the final four goals of the first quarter to lead, 4-3.
The Fighting Scots would out-score UNE 2-1 in the second period to tie things up at five heading into intermission.
After a Jordan Heckelmann goal gave Gordon a 6-5 lead early in the third, Wolfe went back-to-back and sophomore
Shamus Higginbottom added a marker as UNE seemingly seized momentum to lead 8-6.
Gordon would score three times in the final 1:24 of third third, however, to establish a 9-8 advantage heading into the final period.
Big Blue tightened up the defense while reeling off three consecutive goals to take the lead in the fourth. Allan tied the game with 9:10 remaining, then Thomas followed at the 5:34 mark to put UNE on top for good. Wolfe would add a much-needed insurance goal two minutes later to provide the Nor'easters with an 11-9 advantage.
The Fighting Scots got a man-up goal from Evans with 1:47 on the clock but were unable to find the equalizer the rest of the way.

Dan O'Gorman had a solid game for the Nor'easters, winning 12 of 14 face-offs and grabbing six ground balls. Classmate
Nick Gross was credited with three assists, and senior goalkeeper
Jay Letendre stopped 15 shots to earn the win.
Houston Zemanski had 17 saves for the Fighting Scots.
The Nor'easters will be in search of their 10th win Saturday when they play a road match at reigning CCC champion Western New England University (4 p.m.).
