WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England softball team picked up its first two Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) wins of the season on Thursday (Mar. 28), defeating Gordon College by scores of 9-0 (5 innings) and 19-8 (6 innings).

The Nor'easters (8-6, 2-2 CCC) have now won their last 12 meetings against the Fighting Scots (4-10, 2-4 CCC).

Big Blue belted 21 hits, drew 14 walks, and stole 12 bases in the doubleheader. A total of 13 players reached base safely for UNE.

Sophomore Adrienne Chase went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in and two run scored over the twinbill. First-year Meghan Bolano, who succeeded as a pinch hitter in her only at-bat of the first game, tallied three hits in four trips to the plate and scored twice in the nightcap.

Rookie pitchers Chelsea Damon and Lauren Doneski earned victories for the Nor'easters. Damon tossed the five-inning shutout in the opener, striking out five while walking none and surrendering five hits. Doneski threw the initial five innings of the second game, fanning four to move to 4-1. Doneski allow 10 hits, but just three of Gordon's eight runs against her were earned.

Seniors Casey Brigham and Megan Gauger, along with Doneski and first-year Jess Lemos, had two hits apiece for Big Blue. Senior Erin Grover joined Bolano and Brigham in scoring three times on the day. Junior Allie Frazier plated a team-best four runs and picked up five stolen bases.

In game one, the visitors already led 2-0 with one out in the top of the 2nd, Frazier drove in two more with a double down the line in left.

Chase made it 8-0 in the 4th with a one-out single through the right side, scoring a pair.

After stranding two runners in the bottom of the 1st, the Fighting Scots put the first two batters aboard in the 2nd. However, UNE got out of the frame with three straight outs -- starting a string of eight in-a-row retired by Damon.

Game two was really never in question, as the Big Blue lineup chalked up a 12-0 cushion through the top of the 3rd. The Nor'easters scored in all six innings of the contest.

It was 15-2 before Gordon registered six runs in the bottom of the 5th, but UNE tacked on four runs in the 6th to force the early ending.

For the Fighting Scots, Marissa Meenan had two hits and three RBI, while Alyss Unumb knocked in a pair with a double in the 5th. Rachel Ryder led off that same inning with a solo shot to right field. Both Ryder and Kara Pepper scored twice.

Skylar Bareford and Kelly Beardslee each saw action in both games of the day, splitting the losses.

The Nor'easters are off until next Wednesday (3 p.m.) when they head to Eastern Nazarene College for two league outings.
