Wolfe's six goals power Nor'easters past Devils

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. -- Pat Wolfe scored a career-high six goals to lead the University of New England to a 12-7 win over the College at Florham (FDU-Florham) in non-conference men's lacrosse action Thursday (March 21) afternoon at Shields Field.

Winners of three consecutive contests, the Nor'easters now stand at 5-2. The Devils have dropped three of their last four and now own a 2-6 record.

Wolfe's six-goal explosion fell just one tally shy of the program's single-game record set by Dan Leyden '09 in 2007. Including Wolfe, five UNE players have notched six goals in a contest.

Tyler Thomas had his second straight hat-trick for the Nor'easters to push his career total to 123 goals, just one fewer than all-time leader Sean Melnick '02. Dan O'Gorman added a pair of goals.

For the Devils, Jake Higgins scored twice and Daniel Minnich contributed two tallies.

Trailing 2-0 after one period, the Nor'easters responded by outscoring College at Florham 4-0 in the second to carry a 4-2 lead into intermission. Wolfe had three of the four goals to help UNE establish control of the game.

UNE would continue to surge coming out of halftime, scoring five times in the third to push its lead to 9-4. Wolfe and Thomas scored two goals apiece in the frame.

The Devils were unable to mount a comeback in the final quarter.

O'Gorman was 7-for-11 on the draw and added seven ground balls for UNE, which led in that category (29-16) as well as shots (33-27). Nick McMahon had three caused turnovers and scooped up three balls, in addition to scoring his first career goal. Senior goalkeeper Jay Letendre had seven saves to record the victory.

Tim Zangara stopped 10 shots for College at Florham.

The Nor'easters are off until next Wednesday (March 27) when they will open Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 4 p.m. match versus Wentworth Institute of Technology.
