Nor'easters start 2013 with 9-8 win over Wheaton

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Mike Allan (Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Geoff Bruno (Durham, Conn.) scored goals late to lift the University of New England men's lacrosse team to a 9-8 non-conference victory over Wheaton College (Mass.) on Saturday (Mar. 2) at the Big Blue Turf.

It was the third straight win for the Nor'easters (1-0) over the Lyons (0-1).

After Wheaton sophomore Matthew Hillman (Brookline, Mass.) notched his game-high third marker of the day to put his side up (8-7) with four minutes left to play, Allan and Bruno responded at 3:24 and 2:20, respectively, to switch the advantage.

The Lyons managed two shots with a chance to tie; both were blocked in front.

UNE led by no more than one goal the entire way, in a match that featured six ties and four lead changes.

Junior Pat Wolfe (Phippsburg, Maine) had three goals and two assists for Big Blue, while senior Tyler Thomas (Mount Pleasant, N.Y.) went for a goal and four assists. Allan added a pair of scores, and junior Dan O'Gorman (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), Bruno, and first-year Sam Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) recorded the others.

O'Gorman also had 11 ground balls and a 9-of-14 showing at the face-off X in the match.

Defensively, senior Jay Letendre (Southington, Conn.) posted nine stops between the pipes for the Nor'easters, and classmate Nick McMahon (Westfield, Mass.) had three caused turnovers.

Hillman finished with five points to pace Wheaton and sophomore Sean Finn (Kennebunk, Maine) chipped in with a pair of scores. Junior netminder Harrison Bramhall (Barrington, R.I.) made 17 saves in defeat.

UNE returns to action on Thursday ( 4 p.m.) with a home date against the University of Southern Maine. Wheaton visits UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday.
