Nor'easters rally in 7th to down UW-Oshkosh, 4-3

Box Score

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The University of New England scored four times in the bottom of the last inning to overcome a three-run deficit and pick up a 4-3 win over the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Monday (Mar. 18) at the Cape Coral Sports Complex as part of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.

Big Blue (3-3) only had two players reach base prior to the 7th inning, but starting the rally with a walk and two infield errors that loaded the bases. After a Titans' pitching change, UNE junior Jessica Potter (Crown Point, N.Y.) got on with an infield single, allowing senior Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) to trim the gap to 3-1.

First-year Abby Lambert (Brockton, Mass.) stepped in as a pinch hitter and roped a double into left-center, bringing home senior Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) and junior Allie Frazier (Tewksbury, Mass.) to level the contest. Senior Casey Brigham (New London, N.H.) did enough to finish it off on the next play, grounding out to deep second base so that Potter could plate the game-winning tally.

UWO starting pitcher Melissa Gutsmiedl entered the last frame having retired 13 consecutive UNE batters. Of the 18 outs during her six-plus innings of work, she got 15 on ground outs.

Pitching for the Nor'easters, first-year Lauren Doneski (Waltham, Mass.) struck out two and gave up eight hits to improve her own mark to 2-0.

The Titans (4-4) scored a pair in the top of the 3rd, behind a sacrifice fly from Haley Bayreuther and an RBI-single on the infield by Katie Koepsel. Tess Fadness then began the UWO 4th with a solo shot to right field, making it 3-0.

Kassie Krueger of UWO was the lone player in the game to register multiple hits.

UNE will take Tuesday off in the Sunshine State before resuming play Wednesday against the College of Wooster (Ohio) and North Central College (Ill.).
