Brockport opens season with 13-9 win over UNE

Box Score

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The State University of New York (SUNY) at Brockport scored all of its runs in the first three innings and then held off a late charge by the University of New England to post a 13-9 victory at the Cape Coral Sports Complex Saturday morning (Mar. 16) in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.

The contest was the season-opener for both the Golden Eagles (1-0) and the Nor'easters (0-1).

Julie Arnold and Sarah Rosenbarker combined for five hits and eight RBI to lead Brockport. Emily Dumas and Brianna Ferchen each had multiple hits and scored twice, and Emily Kolenda crossed the plate three times.

In the circle, Korey Kibling went 3.2 innings in relief and struck out three to get the win.

For UNE, sophomore Adrienne Chase (Holden, Mass.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. Chase got Big Blue on the board in the top of the 3rd inning with a deep blast over the fence in left center, scoring junior Jessica Potter (Crown Point, N.Y.).

First-year Jess Lemos (Chelmsford, Mass.) had a two-RBI double in the 4th for the Nor'easters, driving in classmate Amanda Vallante (Dracut, Mass.) and Chase. Vallante reached base three times -- including a hit -- and ended up scoring twice. Potter and junior Kirstyn Tracey (Pawcatuck, Conn.) recorded UNE's other hits.

Rookie Abby Lambert (Brockton, Mass.) took the loss for Big Blue, while striking out a pair in 2.1 innings of work. Classmate Lauren Doneski (Waltham, Mass.) fanned two more the rest of the way.

After Brockport registered two unearned runs in the bottom of the 1st, the Golden Eagles plated six in the 2nd to assume an 8-0 cushion.

Chase's homer followed by a hit-by-pitch and four free passes sliced the UNE deficit in half (8-4), but two outs left the bases loaded and ended the threat.

Brockport responded by putting five more runs on the board in the 3rd to go up, 13-4. Rosenbarker and Arnold both had two-RBI singles in the frame.

Down 13-6 entering the top of the 7th, the Nor'easters managed to score three with the help of two errors in the field, but could not get any closer.
