Bates rallies past Nor'easters for 14-9 victory

LEWISTON, Maine -- Jack Allard scored four of his game-high five goals in the second period to help Bates College erase a 5-2 deficit on its way to a 14-9 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over the University of New England Wednesday (March 13) afternoon at Garcelon Field.

Jack Strain, Nick Ford and Dan Hines each scored two goals for the Bobcats (2-2). Hines added four assists for a six-point afternoon. Andrew Berry contributed a career-best nine ground balls, while Paul Donovan won 11 of 19 faceoffs and added seven ground balls.

Tyler Thomas scored three times to pace UNE (2-2). Thomas now has 115 career goals -- just nine behind program leader Sean Melnick. Pat Wolfe and Nick Gross added two goals apiece, while Dan O'Gorman and Geoff Bruno each set-up a pair of goals. O'Gorman won a team-high eight ground balls for Big Blue.

After the Bobcats scored two markers at the outset of the match, the Nor'easters reeled off five unanswered goals to build a 5-2 lead. Wolfe scored both of his goals during that spurt.

Allard would score three of the game's next four goals to help Bates re-establish momentum. Ford added another tally to give the hosts a 7-5 advantage before Thomas notched back-to-back scores to even the match at 7.

Conor Henrie then put Bates on top for good with 1:25 left in the second period, then Allard struck again with 16 ticks on the clock to make the score 9-7.

Strain would score two consecutive goals to open the second half for Bates, and the Nor'easters would get no closer than three the rest of the way.

Charlie Kazarian played the final 43 minutes in goal for Bates, registering eight saves to earn the victory. Jay Letendre had 14 stops for UNE.

For the day, the Bobcats led in shots (47-37) and ground balls (53-44). They also were 3-for-6 in man-up opportunities compared to 0-for-4 for Big Blue.

The Nor'easters will look to snap a two-game losing streak Saturday (March 16) when they host MIT at 1 p.m.
