Greene, Evans help Misericordia top Nor'easters

Box Score

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Matt Greene and Cael Evans combined for 30 points in the final 20 minutes of action as Misericordia University pulled away from the University of New England to a 72-54 men's basketball win in the consolation match of the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 31) at Lamada Gym on the campus of Lycoming College.

Greene finished going 8-of-15 from downtown and a game-high 28 points for the Cougars (4-5), landing a spot on the all-tournament team. Evans made all six of his field goal tries and totaled 15 points -- 13 of which came after halftime -- to go with eight rebounds. Behind eight free throws, Erik Kerns ended with 10 points.

The Nor'easters (1-8) were paced by sophomore Devin Thompson and first-year Justin Pollard with 12 points each. Thompson scored the team's initial eight points; Pollard tallied all of his points following intermission.

Senior Kurt Steiner knocked down 5-of-6 shots to register 11 points off the bench and earn all-tournament team status for UNE. First-year Russ Daly had eight points and seven rebounds.

Big Blue led by as many as five (10-5, 13-8) early on before Misericordia went on a 13-4 run over a four-minute stretch in the 1st half to assume a 30-23 edge. The margin was five (30-25) at the break.

The Nor'easters pulled within one (31-30) when Pollard drained a three-pointer less than a minute into the 2nd period. However, after the Cougars bumped the difference right back up to seven on a triple by Greene and three points by Evans, Misericordia's lead was no less than three before gaining separation late.

In the event's title game, visiting McDaniel College defeated host Lycoming by a score of 62-57.

UNE returns to New England to resume Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday (3 p.m.) at Endicott College.
