CASTLETON, Vt. -- The Castleton State College Spartans scored three times in the second period before holding on late to take a 5-4 ECAC Men's East victory over the University of New England Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9) at Spartan Arena.
After sweeping a pair of ECAC East games over the weekend, the Spartans open their season at 2-0-0. The Nor'easters are now 1-2-1 overall, 0-2-0 in league play.
The Nor'easters surged early, getting goals from first-year
David Goff and sophomore
Ryan Quinn in the opening 3:05 to grab an early 2-0 advantage.
Castleton would halt UNE's momentum right away, however, as Kyle Richards and Bart Moran scored two minutes apart to tie the contest at two midway through the first frame.
The hosts utilized a huge second period to establish control. After Castleton's Will Laking and UNE's
Blaise Healy traded goals over the opening 11 minutes, Moran and Ross Herzog went back-to-back for Castleton at 13:04 and 14:32, respectively to give the Spartans a 5-3 lead.
Castleton remained in control during the third until UNE junior
Jared Melman knocked home a rebound with less than a minute to play to get UNE back to within one.
The Spartans won the ensuing face-off and maintained possession inside the UNE defensive zone the rest of the way to secure the win.
Erick Carnotti turned aside 24 shots for the home team, while senior
Ian Edwards recorded 33 saves for Big Blue.
The Nor'easters will open up their 2013-14 home schedule next weekend when they host St. Michael's College on Friday (Nov. 15) and No. 3 Norwich University the following afternoon.
