Bowdoin delivers victory number 500 for Meagher

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Tim Coffey had a hat-trick, and Bowdoin College scored six power-play goals in a 9-3 non-league win over University of New England in men's ice hockey action Tuesday evening (Nov. 26) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The victory was the 500th for Bowdoin head coach Terry Meagher. In his 31st season, Meagher becomes the sixth Division III head coach to reach the 500-win plateau.

Coffey scored two of his goals on the power play and added a short-handed tally for his first three goals of the season. Bowdoin also received a strong performance from senior Colin Downey, who had a five-point evening with a goal and four assists.

UNE jumped out quickly when junior Jared Melman scored just 24 seconds into the contest.

Bowdoin would notch the next three goals -- two in the first period and one to start the second -- to grab a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore Chris Fenwick (Quispamsis, New Brunswick), and juniors Alec Root and Connor Quinn did the damage during the Polar Bear spurt.

The Nor'easters would even things up quickly early in the second frame as junior Zeth Zielinski and sophomore Sam Vikich scored 19 seconds apart.

Coffey notched a short-handed goal at 9:36 of the second to give Bowdoin the lead for good. He grabbed a loose puck in the Polar Bear defensive end and broke in alone to light the lamp and make the score 4-3 in favor of the visitors.

Bowdoin would pour it on in the third, scoring five power-play goals, including three on a UNE five-minute major penalty to win going away. Coffey had two of the extra-skater markers, while Downey, senior Harry Matheson and junior John McGinnis each added one.

McGinnis finished with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) for the Polar Bears, who led 37-26 in shots on goal and were a tidy 6-for-7 on the power play.

Junior Max Fenkell played the first two periods in goal to earn the victory. He was credited with 17 saves before giving way to senior Steve Messina, who stopped six shots in the third for the Polar Bears (2-2-1).

Senior Ian Edwards turned away 28 shots in goal for UNE.

Bowdoin hits the ice again Saturday (Nov. 30), taking on Suffolk University in a 1 p.m. start on the campus of Colby College.

The Nor'easters (2-5-1) return to action Saturday and Sunday at the PAL Stovepipe Invitational, hosted by Southern New Hampshire University. Big Blue opens up versus the host Penmen at 4:30 p.m.
