Southern Maine defeats Nor'easters in league date

GORHAM, Maine -- Dylan Wells made 28 saves and surrendered just one goal with 91 seconds remaining to backstop the University of Southern Maine in a 4-1 ECAC Men's East ice hockey victory over the University of New England on Friday night (Nov. 22) at USM Ice Arena.

The Huskies (3-3) improve to 3-2 in league play, while Big Blue drops back to 2-4-1 overall (1-4 ECAC East).

Southern Maine got goals from Alexc Pompeo and Sam Blanchet 1:19 apart in the latter stages of the 1st period to get out in front. Shots were 10-7 in favor of the hosts after 20 minutes of action.

Jamie Osborne tallied his second assist of the evening during the middle frame, setting up Mike Greene at the 12:21 mark to make it 3-0. The two reversed roles moments into the 3rd period, as Greene fed Osborne to increase the margin to four.

UNE broke up the shutout with 1:31 left in the match, as first-year Connor Bates tallied his first marker of the season.

Senior goalie Ian Edwards totaled 24 saves for the Nor'easters, who finished the night with a 29-28 edge in shots.

Big Blue returns to the ice on Tuesday (7 p.m.) when Bowdoin College visits the Harold Alfond Forum.
