Goodrich, Mitchell lift UNE over Southern Maine

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters received goals from Sean Goodrich and Scott Mitchell before holding off the University of Southern Maine late to take a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer win Monday afternoon (Oct. 7) at Hannaford Field.

The win snapped a three-game winless streak for the Nor'easters, who return to the .500 mark at 5-5-2. UNE last owned a .500 mark 12 games into the season during the 2009 campaign. Southern Maine is winless (0-12-1) in its 13 matches.

Goodrich tallied the opening score of the match, heading home a cross from the left side by first-year Ryan Stephens for his team-best fifth marker of the year.

The Nor'easters took that 1-0 lead into intermission, then added the game-winner early in the second half. After Southern Maine failed to clear a UNE corner kick, Mitchell drove home the loose ball for his first collegiate goal to give Big Blue a 2-0 cushion.

Less than five minutes later, Husky junior Ryan Jordan let go a free kick from long range that deflected off a UNE defender and eluded keeper Aidan McParland, cutting USM's deficit in half.

Southern Maine would have a good opportunity to square the match a bit later, but a blast by junior Michael Daniel sailed just high.

McParland had four saves to record the victory for the Nor'easters, who trailed 11-7 in shots. First-year Adam Verreault had a pair of stops for the Huskies.

UNE plays another non-conference tilt this week, heading to Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I. for a 6 p.m. start Wednesday.
