UNE records straight-set victory over Leopards

BOSTON -- Led by senior Angie Brunette with 19 kills and three blocks, the University of New England women's volleyball squad picked up a 3-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match contested Tuesday night (Oct. 29) at Tansey Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-9, 25-20, and 25-22.

With the win, the Nor'easters (14-8) improve to 5-2 in the CCC and secure one of the top four seeds for the upcoming conference tournament, which begins next week. UNE has defeated the Leopards (16-10, 2-5 CCC) in nine consecutive outings.

Brunette helped the visitors get off to a very fast start, racking up 10 of her kills and a .529 attacking percentage in the opening frame. For the match, junior Leah Janelle and first-year Grayson Szczepaniak each added eight winners, and rookie Erika Sawicki totaled seven. Senior Maria Kuehl put forth a solid all-around performance, going for 34 assists, 10 digs, and five aces. Classmate Kirsta Adie registered 13 digs, and Janelle contributed 10 more.

Jordan Young had five kills was part of four blocks to pace Wentworth, and Shannon Ponce dished out 16 assists. Sheena Dignean and Sam Curran combined for 21 digs.

Both squads conclude the regular season on Saturday. Big Blue entertains Roger Williams University (3 p.m.), while the Leopards head to Western New England University.
