Salve escapes 3rd set to sweep Nor'easters

Box Score

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Salve Regina University needed all of 32 points in the third frame to close out the University of New England women's volleyball team, taking a 3-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) decision on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26) at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Set scores were 25-19, 25-18, and 32-30.

Senior Claire Adams and junior Jennifer Duggan went for 14 and 10 kills, respectively, to pace the Seahawks (23-3, 6-1 CCC). Thirty assists from junior Taylor Violet helped fuel the attack, and her 14 digs was a team-high. Senior Jill Diffendaffer had a hand in four blocks.

For UNE (13-8, 4-2 CCC), senior Angie Brunette led the way with nine kills. First-years Erika Sawicki and Grayson Szczepaniak combined for 15 winners, while junior Leah Janelle and senior Maria Kuehl had six kills apiece. Kuehl dished out 26 assists to go with 10 digs. Classmate Kirsta Adie topped all players with 17 digs. Sophomore Jalene Kanayurak notched five aces.

After Salve overcame an early deficit to claim the opening set by six points, things were tied 13-13 midway through the 2nd stanza. The hosts secured the next four points to gain the edge for good, and Duggan registered three of her four aces to close it out.

The Nor'easters were down 24-20 in the 3rd before two kills from Brunette sandwiched two aces by Kanayurak forced a little bonus volleyball. Once UNE grabbed the edge on an attack error by SRU, the teams traded pairs of points until it was 29-28 in favor of Big Blue. A UNE service error was negated by a kill from Szczepaniak (30-29), but a kill by Duggan and two errors from the visitors was enough to give the win to the Seahawks.

Both squads return to action on Tuesday (7 p.m.), as Salve Regina hosts Western New England University and UNE visits Wentworth Institute of Technology.
