WENHAM, Mass. -- Andy Guthrie scored in the 74th minute to break a scoreless tie and give Gordon College the margin for a 1-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference men's soccer win over University of New England Wednesday evening (Oct. 23) under the lights at Brigham Athletic Complex.
Ranked 13th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, the Fighting Scots won for the fifth straight time to improve to 15-1 overall, 6-1 in conference play. The Nor'easters slipped below the .500 mark at 6-7-3 and are now 1-5-1 in CCC action. UNE, which has played league opponents tough all season long, suffered its fourth one-goal setback versus CCC competition, including three 1-0 decisions.
Guthrie drove home the game-winner on a free kick just outside the top of the box. His blast found the upper left-hand corner of the goal.
Gordon held a 13-5 lead in shots and 5-4 margin in corner kicks. Josh Spoonhour made a pair of saves for Gordon, while UNE goalkeeper
Aidan McParland stopped six shots.
The Nor'easters will look regain their winning ways Saturday (Oct. 26) when they entertain Endicott College on Senior Day at Barbara J. Hazard Field. Start time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
