BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year Grayson Szczepaniak totaled 14 points to pace the University of New England women's volleyball team in a 3-0 triumph over Gordon College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Tuesday night (Oct. 15) at the Harold Alfond Forum. Set scores were 25-14, 25-13, and 25-9.

The win was the sixth consecutive for the Nor'easters (11-7, 3-1 CCC) against the Fighting Scots (9-12, 0-4 CCC). In its last three outings overall, UNE has taken each one by a 3-0 margin.

Szczepaniak finished with eight kills and five service aces, in addition to one solo block. Senior Angie Brunette registered a match-high 10 kills and was part of three blocks, while classmate Maria Kuehl fueled the attack with 22 assists. Defensively, senior Kirsta Adie and sophomore Hanna Roberge went for 23 and 12 digs, respectively.

Big Blue met little resistance early on, claiming the initial 11 points of the match on the way to taking the 1st set by the same difference.

The cushion was 5-0 in favor of the hosts as the 2nd set began, though the lead was just six (15-9) past the midway point of the stanza. A 10-4 stretch from UNE brought the frame to a close, featuring three of the six kills in the match by junior Leah Janelle.

Points in the opening moments of the 3rd set were tightly contested, and there were two lead-changes as well as five ties in the first 11 plays. With a 6-5 edge, however, the Nor'easters regained control and rattled off 19 of the final 23 points to end the contest.

First-year Jenna Labbadia had a team-best six kills for Gordon, and junior Laura Schmidt added five winners. Senior Lauren Kranyak totaled 14 assists to go with 11 digs -- a figure that was matched by first-year Maggie Risma.

Both sides are back on the court Thursday (7 p.m.) for non-conference road dates, with UNE heading to Saint Joseph's College and the Fighting Scots visiting Suffolk University.
