BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Two goals during the initial portion of the 1st half proved to be just enough offense, as the University of New England men's soccer team recorded a 2-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory over Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 12) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The triumph was the first of the conference slate for the Nor'easters (6-5-3, 1-3-1 CCC), while the Lions fall back to 2-10 overall (0-5 CCC).
Sophomore
Tyler Garnick got things started just over 100 seconds into the match, maneuvering around a defender in the center of the field and placing a shot to the left of the ENC goalie.
UNE then doubled its margin in the 24th minute, when junior
Anthony Frangione served a corner kick into the front portion of the box and sophomore
Will Bushey rose above a crowd to head his first goal of the season inside the near post.
Big Blue maintained the 2-0 cushion at halftime, despite being out-shot (9-6) by the Lions.
Eastern Nazarene began to push forward more and more in the 2nd half, and gained a man-advantage in the 58th minute when a UNE player was sent off for a hard foul. With the increased possession, the Lions eventually pulled back within one at the 87:49 mark, as senior Pacifique Jabiro collected a corner kick bouncing through the box and found the lower left side of the net. First-year Jacob Mason notched an assist with the restart.
The visitors were unable to get off a shot in the remaining time, though, as the Nor'easters held on for the win.
For the game, ENC finished on top of a 20-7 edge in shots.
UNE junior goalie
Aidan McParland made three saves before exiting the match in the 58th minute, and sophomore
Nate Diffin turned in four stops the rest of the way to secure the result.
Junior Jake Johnson posted one save for the Lions, who take on Regis College in a non-conference match on Wednesday (4 p.m.).
Big Blue gets a week off before resuming its CCC schedule next Saturday (1 p.m.) at home against Roger Williams University.
