Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College scored one goal in each half to defeat the University of New England, 2-0, in non-conference women's soccer action on Thursday evening (Oct. 10) at Garcelon Field.

The victory snapped a six-game winless streak for the Bobcats (3-6-1), while the Nor'easters fall to 6-5-1 on the year.

Lily Peterson got the hosts on the board in the 24th minute, redirecting a cross from the left wing off the foot of Hannah Graves just inside the near post.

Shots were 17-4 (7-0 on-goal) in favor of Bates at halftime, but the score remained 1-0 with the play of UNE first-year goalie Brielle Robinson. Robinson was tested on several occasions on the way to six saves during the opening 45 minutes, including one acrobatic leap to stop a long-distance try from dipping under the crossbar early on.

The Bobcats continued to have the majority of the scoring chances following intermission, and received an insurance goal from Graves in the 81st minute. Kara Stefaniak carried possession down the left wing and dealt a cross from the endline through the goal mouth to Graves crashing the right post.

Anabel Schmelz needed to make just one save to earn the shutout for Bates, which finished 27-12 advantage in shot attempts (11-1 on-goal). The Bobcats host No. 14 Middlebury College on Saturday (11 a.m.).

Robinson totaled nine stops for the Nor'easters, who are back at home the same day (1 p.m.) for a league date with Eastern Nazarene College.
