Angie Brunette and junior
Leah Janelle combined for 32 points to lead the University of New England to a 3-0 victory over Bates College in non-conference women's volleyball action Tuesday evening (Oct. 1) at the Harold Alfond Forum. Set scores were 25-16, 25-13, and 25-19.
The Nor'easters won for the fifth time in six outings, improving to 8-5 overall. After a 5-1 start to the season, the Bobcats now sit at 7-10 on the year.
Brunette (18.5 points) finished with 12 kills, three solo blocks, and three aces, while Janelle (13.5 points) added 11 kills and a pair of aces. Senior
Maria Kuehl helped fuel the attack -- which connected at a .440 clip -- with 30 assists. Senior
Kirsta Adie totaled 10 digs and successfully received all 17 of the Bates serves that came her direction.
UNE surged out to a 7-1 cushion in the opening set. Though the Bobcats managed to get back within three (13-10), Big Blue used a 7-0 run to seize control.
The Nor'easters began quickly (5-0) in the 2nd set and used a similar stretch not long after to assume a 13-3 advantage on the way to a commanding lead.
Bates fell behind, 9-2, early in the 3rd frame, but reduced the deficit to just three (19-16, 22-19) in an attempt to prolong the match. However, Brunette surrounded a Bobcats' attack error with two of her kills to seal the deal.
The visitors were paced by Brynn Wendel with seven winners. Juniors Tess Walther and Miranda Shapiro guided the balanced attack with 17 and 10 assists, respectively.
UNE travels to Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday for a trio of contests at the Crabtree Classic. In addition to the host Warriors, Big Blue will face Framingham State University (12 p.m.) and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (4 p.m.).
Bates resumes its conference slate the same day at Colby College.
