BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore
Anthony Frangione (Barnstead, N.H.) scored his first goal of his career with 3:44 left in double overtime to give the University of New England men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over New England College in non-conference action Sunday afternoon (Sep. 9) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
After inserting a corner kick and collecting the rebound that came out, Frangione dribbled in towards the end line and lofted up a shot off the goalkeeper's finger tips and across the line.
It was the second time in the last six meetings between the teams that UNE (2-2-0) had come out victorious against the Pilgrims (1-2-1).
The Nor'easters almost put it away twice in the first extra session, as junior
Matthew Christie (Hudson, N.H.) had a high shot flicked away in the 95th minute and sent another off the crossbar in the 100th.
On the other end of the field, sophomore goalie
Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) came up with a key 96th-minute save, denying a dangerous NEC attempt in front with his left hand as all his momentum was moving right.
For the game, Big Blue finished with a 21-10 edge in shots and 6-0 advantage in corners.
McParland turned aside five shots to earned the shutout, while his counterpart, Pilgrims senior Corey Barbo (Yarmouthport, Mass.), recorded seven saves on the day.
