Daniel lifts Southern Maine to 1-0 victory over UNE

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of Southern Maine first-year Michael Daniel (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) scored the lone goal of the match in the 77th minute to provide the Huskies with a 1-0 win over the University of New England in a non-conference men's soccer match played Wednesday (Sep. 5) afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The victory was the first of the young season for the Huskies (1-2), who topped UNE for the first time since 2008. The Nor'easters dropped their second straight decision to fall to 1-2.

The contest was void of quality scoring opportunities until first-year Kevin Diegnan (Pepperell, Mass.) slipped a pass from just inside of midfield to Daniel, who took a few touches and deposited a low left-footed shot into the back of the net after UNE sophomore keeper Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) had come off his line.

The Huskies came away with the win despite trailing in shots, 15-9, and taking four fewer corner kicks (7-3). Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine) was credited with six saves in recording his first decision of the season.

For the Nor'easters, McParland turned aside three shots.

Both teams return to the pitch this weekend. Southern Maine travels to Worcester State University on Saturday (Sep. 8) for a 1 p.m. match, and UNE hosts New England College Sunday (Sep. 9) at 1 p.m.
