Keene State holds on to edge Nor'easters in five

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Keene State College held off a late rally by the University of New England for a 3-2 win in a non-conference volleyball match held at the Campus Recreation Center of Roger Williams University on Saturday (Sep. 29). Set scores were 25-20, 21-25, 25-8, 17-25, 15-13.

Earlier in the day, the Nor'easters (7-5) had dropped a straight-set decision to the host Hawks.

Down two sets to one, Big Blue evened the match with a 25-17 victory in the fourth. UNE found itself trailing 7-2 in the fifth before roaring back to tie things at 11. The Owls scored five of the final eight points to claim victory.

Sophomore Sammy Dormio (Leesburg, Va.) led the way for the Owls (8-8) with 19 kills while adding 10 digs. First-year Angela Silveri (Poughquag, N.Y.) chipped in 14 kills, including four in the decisive fifth set.

Senior Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) registered 17 kills to pace Big Blue. Sophomore Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.) added 13 with just two attack errors in 24 attempts. Junior Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.) finished with seven kills and three blocks, while classmate Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) posted a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs.

The Nor'easters return to play Tuesday (Oct. 2) when they head to Wenham, Mass. for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match-up with Gordon College. Start time is listed at 7 p.m.
