McGlone's late goal gets UNE past Lyndon State

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England junior Kyle McGlone (Peabody, Mass.) scored with 2:08 remaining for the game's only goal, as the Nor'easters slipped past Lyndon State College, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action played under the lights Tuesday (Sep. 26) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

The victory snaps a three-game losing streak for the Nor'easters (4-5), who, with the victory, match their win output of a year ago. The loss drops the Hornets to 2-6 on the season.

McGlone came off the bench with 5:37 left and wasted little time providing the Nor'easters with some heroics, taking a feed from first-year Tyler Garnick (Derry, N.H.) and pushing a low shot inside the left post. Sophomore Scott Mitchell (Stoughton, Mass.) was credited with a secondary assist after starting the play with a service from midfield.

Lyndon State has several quality scoring chances in the second frame, but UNE sophomore goalkeeper Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) was up for the challenge. Hornets' senior Patrice Lumumba (Burlington, Vt.) had strong chances denied by McParland in the 67th and 73rd minutes. McParland also made a sprawling save of a Lumumba bid midway thru the first stanza.

For the game, McParland had five saves to record his third shutout of the season for UNE, which outshot Lyndon State by a margin of 22-10.

Senior Jason Gray (East Thetford, Vt.) made eight stops for the Hornets, who host Maine Maritime Academy for a North Atlantic Conference match Saturday (Sep. 29) at 1 p.m.

The Nor'easters will be looking for their first Commonwealth Coast Conference win that same day when they head to Endicott College for a 5 p.m. tilt.
