BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Gordon College women's soccer team scored a goal in each half on its way to 2-0 victory over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday (Sep. 22) afternoon at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Fighting Scots, who had lost their two previous meetings with the Nor'easters, improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in conference matches. UNE now stands at 3-6 (1-1 CCC).
Gordon got on the board early when sophomore Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) controlled a rebound and deposited the ball in the back of the net 4:41 into the contest to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Senior Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, Vt.) put the initial shot on goal after a service from the right corner to help set-up the play.
UNE had its best scoring opportunity of the day in the 14th minute as senior
Nicole Faircloth (Westfield, Mass.) found the crossbar with a shot from long range.
The Fighting Scots gained some breathing room in the 72nd minute. Junior Woudenberg (Whitinsville, Mass.) struck a corner kick from the right side that found the head of graduate student Krysti Leach (Naples, Maine), who re-directed it into the goal.
Junior Kari Christenen (Standish, Maine) stopped seven UNE shots on goal to record the victory. Junior goalkeeper
Gina Iannazzi (Methuen, Mass.) had nine saves for the Nor'easters.
Gordon will look to improve on its strong start Wednesday (Sep. 26) with a 7 p.m. home match versus New England College.
Big Blue heads to Bowdoin College Tuesday (Sep. 25) for a 4 p.m. start.
