Zapata's golden goal gets Clark past Nor'easters

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Sophomore Oscar Zapata (Lima, Peru) scored midway thru the final overtime period to give the Clark University Cougars a 2-1 double-overtime decision over the University of New England in a non-conference men's soccer match played Wednesday (Sep. 19) evening.

The victory was the third consecutive for Clark, which climbed over the .500 mark to 4-3. The Nor'easters suffered their second straight setback to drop to 3-4.

UNE found itself down early on a goal by Clark sophomore Zachary Doenmez (Dublin, N.H.) in the third minute. Junior Kent Vorland (Kristiansand, Norway) was credited with an assist on the play.

The Nor'easters drew even 15 minutes later when sophomore Zack Bunnell (Amesbury, Mass.) notched his first tally of the season.

After nearly 90 minutes of scoreless soccer ensued, junior Josh Demers (Warwick, R.I.) set-up Zapata, who knocked home his sixth strike of the season, and 16th of his young career.

The win in goal went to Clark senior Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.), who needed just one save. His counterpart, sophomore Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) had a busy evening, making 10 stops.

UNE returns to action Saturday (Sep. 22) as part of Alumni Weekend when Gordon College comes to Biddeford for a 2:30 p.m. match-up at Hazard Field.
