Bowdoin backs ranking with 3-0 victory over UNE

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The nationally-ranked Bowdoin College women's volleyball team improved its record to 5-0 with a straight-set victory over the University of New England in non-conference action Tuesday (Sep. 11) evening at Morrell Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-19, 25-13 and 25-21.

The Polar Bears, ranked 25th nationally and No. 1 in the most recent New England Women's Volleyball Association poll, ran their home win streak to 36 matches, while UNE lost its second straight to fall to 4-2 on the young season.

Junior Ellie Brennan (Medway, Mass.) and first-year Christie Jewett (Sunnyvale, Calif.) had seven kills apiece to pace a balanced Bowdoin attack. Junior Sophia Cornew (Portola Valley, Calif.) dished out 27 assists for the Polar Bears, who hit at a .236 clip.

For UNE, senior Jillian Goldstein (Lynnfield, Mass.) recorded a match-high and career-best 10 kills, while classmate Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) chipped in eight. Junior Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) contributed 23 assists and 13 digs.

The Nor'easters will open play at the Harold Alfond Forum on Thursday (Sep. 11) when they host St. Joseph's College at 6 p.m.
