BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's volleyball team got off to a very fast start with a 25-7 decision in the first frame of a 3-0 triumph over Bridgewater State University in non-conference action Saturday afternoon (Sep. 1) at the Campus Center. Sets two and three were won by scores of 25-19 and 25-21.
Even at 3-3 in the first, the Nor'easters closed with a 22-4 stretch to seize control of the match. Big Blue wrapped up the second set with a 9-3 spurt to provide the six-point ending margin, then put together a key 5-0 cluster of points in the latter stages of the third to break a tied game and complete the sweep.
Senior
Paige Curran (Chelsmford, Mass.) registered her second double digit kills total on the day, pacing UNE with 10 winners. Classmate
Jillian Goldstein (Lynnfield, Mass.) contributed seven kills.
Big Blue junior setter
Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) posted a double-double for the victors with 25 assists and 10 digs.
The Bears (0-2) were led by junior Tayler Beck (Marion, Mass.) with nine kills. Classmate Kristen Robillard (Swansea, Mass.) tallied a match-best 15 digs, and fellow junior Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) was credited with 18 assists.
The Nor'easters (2-0) are back on the court next Saturday (Sep. 8) for three matches at the Roger Williams Invitational.
