Strong first half propels No. 25 Springfield past UNE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The nationally-ranked Springfield College women's soccer team scored three times in the first half on its way to a 3-1 win over the University of New England in the final game of the Springfield Invitational played Saturday (Sep. 1) night under the lights at Brock-Affleck Field.

Springfield, ranked 25th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NCSAA) preseason poll, won for the second time is as many days to improve to 2-0, while the Nor'easters slipped to 0-2.

Erica Donnelly, Vicky DiNatale and Brittany Samson scored first-half goals to give the Pride a commanding 3-0 cushion heading into intermission.

Senior Nicole Faircloth (Westfield, Mass.) prevented the Nor'easters from being shut out with just two seconds remaining when her shot deflected off the crossbar and slid across the goal line.

Both teams were limited in their shots attempts, with Springfield managing eight shots and UNE just four. Junior Gina Iannazzi (Methuen, Mass.) and sophomore Sarah Papapietro (Bonita, Calif.) each played a half in goal and combined to make a pair of saves for the Nor'easters, who open their home schedule Wednesday (Sep. 5) with a non-conference match versus Husson University (6:30 p.m.).
