Westfield State rallies late to top Big Blue, 2-1

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Senior forward Kayley Miller set-up the game-tying goal and then put home the game-winner -- all in the last 9:15 of play -- to lift Westfield State University to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the University of New England in non-conference women's soccer action at the Springfield College Invitational, played Friday (Aug. 31) at Brock-Affleck Field.

Miller got the deciding tally on her own, registering the unassisted marker with just under three minutes left in the contest. The Owls (1-0) had leveled the match in the 81st minute when Miller found senior Brittanie McGregor for a goal.

UNE first-year Jackie Dickerson (Windham, N.H.) began the scoring in the 18th minute, on Big Blue's only shot of the first half.

Westfield finished with sizeable advantages in shots (12-2) and corner kicks (8-0), but needed nearly the entire 90 minutes to get past Nor'easters junior goalkeeper Gina Iannazzi (Metheun, Mass.), who made nine saves in her debut for UNE.

Jess Habif made one second-half stop for the Owls, who square off with Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday.

Big Blue returns to the pitch Saturday night for a date with the host Pride (7:15 p.m.) --  a squad ranked at No. 25 in the NSCAA Preseason Poll.
