Bushey uses his head to lead UNE to win in opener

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year Will Bushey (South Portland, Maine) scored his second goal of the game on a header, breaking a tie in the 82nd minute to give the University of New England a 2-1 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in a mutual men's soccer season-opener Friday evening under the lights at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Bushey's game-winning goal came after junior Matthew Christie (Hudson, N.H.) lofted a cross from the left flank. Earlier in the contest, Bushey had knotted the match at 1-all when he directed a service from sophomore Scott Mitchell (Stoughton, Mass) with his head into the net. Senior Ethan Wells (Franconia, N.H.) was credited with a secondary assist on the play, coming in the 17th minute.

The Mariners got on the scoreboard early when sophomore Evan Turmenne (Brunswick, Maine) deposited a rebound off a blocked Mariner attempt to open the scoring with just 2:09 elapsed.

After Bushey's game-deciding tally at the 81:18 mark, Wells made a pair of key defensive plays late to help the Nor'easters hold on to their lead.

Sophomore goalkeeper Aidan McParland (Brockville, Ontario) made seven saves for UNE, which trailed 16-13 in shots. His counterpart, junior William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.), stopped three shots for the Mariners.

Big Blue returns to action Sunday (Sep. 2) on the road at Thomas College (4 p.m). Maine Maritime travels to UMaine Machias for a 7 p.m. night game Wednesday (Sep. 5).
