NEWPORT, R.I. -- The University of New England pounded out 15 hits and first-year Kelly Reid (Nantucket, Mass.) tossed a 3-hitter as the third-seeded Nor'easters dropped No. 1 Salve Regina University, 11-0, in Game 9 of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Softball Championship played Thursday evening (May 3) at Toppa Field.

UNE (25-12), now the only team (of 3) remaining in the double elimination tournament with 0 losses, will await the winner of Saturday morning's elimination game between the Seahawks and No. 2 Endicott College (10 a.m.). The Nor'easters take to the field in Newport at approximately 12 p.m.

The offense jumped on Salve pitching early for a pair of runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings. Leading 5-0 heading into the top of the 7th, Big Blue added six more to provide the final tally.

Senior Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) led the attack going 4-for-5 at the plate and scoring twice. First-year Adrienne Chase (Holden, Mass.) went 3-for-4 at the dish and drove in four runs. Junior Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) added two hits.

Reid was in control once again, surrendering just the three hits and no walks over seven innings. In UNE's three tournament games (21 innings), she has given up 10 hits, two walks, and one earned run, all while striking out 14 batters.

Junior Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) and sophomore Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.) had back-to-back RBI-doubles in the 1st to put the Nor'easters in front. Chase started a play in the 2nd (single to left and an error) that allowed sophomore Jessica Potter (Crown Point, N.Y.) and first-year Gabrielle LaRoche (Deerfield, N.H.) to come around and score.

The Nor'easters lineup refused to go down in order even once on the night, and after non-scoring innings in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th, Chase singled home senior Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) in the 6th to make the difference five (5-0).

In the 7th, Johnson plated two on a one-out triple to left-center. After Potter got on with a walk, Chase did some more damage with 2-run double to left. Gott pushed the margin to double digits (10-0) with a triple to right-center -- the fifth extra-base hit for UNE -- and scored on the ensuing groundout.

Kristen Parolise was the only player for Salve Regina (23-15) to reach as far as second base in the game, coming on a two-out double in the 5th. Jen Cruver struck out seven while taking the loss in the circle.

Cruver and the Seahawks had swept the April 14 doubleheader when the teams met earlier in the season, defeating UNE by scores of 5-4 (8 innings; 1-1 after regulation) and 1-0.
