BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of New England softball team made quick work of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader Saturday afternoon (Apr. 21) at Carr Diamond, defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology by scores of 10-0 (5 innings) and 6-1.
UNE reaches the 20-win mark (20-10) for the sixth straight season, and improves to 12-4 in CCC games. The Nor'easters have won 11 of the last 12 meetings against the Leopards (10-23, 1-15 CCC).
There was no shortage of offense for Big Blue in
game one, as UNE belted 16 hits and scored 10 times in the run-rule-shortened contest, despite leaving 11 runners on base.
Three players -- senior
Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine), sophomore
Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.), and first-year
Gabrielle LaRoche (Deerfield, N.H.) -- went 3-for-4 at the plate to pace the Nor'easters. Each also scored twice, and LaRoche got things started in the top of the 1st with a two-RBI single up the middle that scored juniors
Casey Brigham (New London, Conn.) and
Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine).
After senior pitcher
Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt.) got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the 2nd, UNE tacked on four runs in the first half of the 3rd. Johnson and classmate
Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) had RBI-hits in the frame, while sophomore
Lauren Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine) drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.
With LaRoche and Vaudreuil on in the 4th, junior
Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) got into the action with a her second home run of the season. Brigham got the visitor's total to double digits with a bases-loaded walk later in the inning.
Bigelow fanned five en route to her sixth win (6-4), while allowing five shits and three walks.
Kelly Budzik had two hits for Wentworth.
The hits kept coming for UNE as
game two began, when, already ahead 1-0, six Nor'easters reached safely in the top of the 2nd. Doubles from sophomore
Jessica Potter (Crown Point, N.Y.) and Johnson, following by a single from sophomore
Kirstyn Tracey (Hope Valley, R.I.), and the advantage was 3-0. Two outs in the inning came before Brigham and Grover knocked in runs to extend the margin to 5-0.
Haylee Bacik hit a solo shot off Big Blue first-year
Kelly Reid (Nantucket, Mass.) in the bottom of the stanza to provide the only scoring for the Leopards.
Reid was otherwise strong in the circle to notch her 10th win against three setbacks, striking out nine while giving up six hits and no walks.
Brigham had three hits in the outing and Potter tallied two for UNE.
For Wentworth, Randi Swihart finished with a pair of hits. Sam Burgner took both pitching losses for the Leopards on the afternoon.
The Nor'easters are back at it on Tuesday with the CCC regular-season finale against Nichols College -- a doubleheader originally scheduled for Sunday that has been postponed due to the forecast of inclement weather.
