BRISTOL, R.I. -- The University of New England softball team connected for 24 hits on Sunday (Apr. 15), en route to a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader sweep (5-2, 11-3) of Roger Williams University at Paolino Field.
With the victories, the Nor'easters (16-10, 8-4 CCC) move to 8-1 in the last nine meetings between the teams. The Hawks (13-16) drop back to 9-5 in league play.
UNE was the only team to get on the board through the first five innings of
game one, plating two in the top of the 3rd. Big Blue took advantage of four RWU errors in the frame and worked seniors
Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) and
Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) around to score.
The Nor'easters added a pair in the 6th, as junior
Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) blasted a two-out home run over the fnece in left-center that also scored sophomore
Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.).
Roger Williams got two back in the bottom of the 6th behind four singles, making it 4-2.
UNE tacked on one more in its last at-bat, and retired the potential tying run with two on in the Hawks' 7th to seal it.
First-year pitcher
Kelly Reid (Nantucket, Mass.) fanned seven and allowed no walks while giving up five hits to improve to 7-3. Gott, Gauger, and junior
Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) each had two hits for the offense.
Jaclyn Doolin took the loss for RWU.
Scoring came much quicker and more often in
game two, as the Nor'easters notched two in the 1st and plated runs in five of the seven innings. UNE scored the last seven runs of the contest in the final three frames to pull away to the win.
Gott went 4-for-5 in the game, while Grover and junior
Casey Brigham (New London, Conn.) both had three hits in four at-bats. Vaudreuil registered two hits, and Johnson totaled four runs batted in.
Grover, as well as first-year
Adrienne Chase (Holden, Mass.), scored twice, which alone was enough support for Big Blue senior pitcher
Erin Lyons (Salem, N.H.), who struck out three in getting her record to 4-3.
An RBI-single by Brigham made it 2-0 early on, but Roger Williams matched that in the bottom of the 1st on a two-run homer to center by Hannah Pirez, scoring Caroline Atkinson.
UNE added two more in the 2nd, and while one for the Hawks in the 4th made it 4-3, Johnson provided some breathing room with a two-out, three-run double to left-center. Chase, Vaudreuil, and Brigham all scored on the play.
The Nor'easters finished with 15 hits in the outing, and the 11 runs were a season-high, in spite of the 13 runners left on base.
Roger Williams starter Kelly Marcin was tagged with the loss in two innings of work -- though none of the four runs UNE scored in that time were earned. Both Pirez and Atkinson had two hits in the game.
