BANGOR, Maine -- The Husson University Eagles used a strong day at the plate on their way to a 7-5, 8-4 doubleheader sweep of the University of New England in non-conference softball play Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 11) at O'Keefe Field.

Husson extended its winning streak to four games while improving its record to 17-8. The Nor'easters saw a five-game win streak come to an end to drop to 14-8.

In game one, the Eagles jumped on UNE early to establish a 5-2 lead after two innings. Nicole Sargent had a two-run single to help key Husson's four-run 1st.

Both pitchers steadied themselves over the middle innings, putting zeroes on the scoreboard in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings. The Nor'easters cut their deficit to one (5-4) in the top of the 6th on a two-run double by senior Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine). The Eagles put the game away in the home half of that frame on RBI singles by Lona Sargent and Heidi Shaw.

Lead-off batter Courtney Hill finished with three of Husson's 11 hits, while Lona Sargent added two and scored twice. Kody Lyon worked her way around eight hits to record the pitching win. She walked two and struck out six.

UNE had eight different players with one hit. Junior Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine) scored two of the Nor'easters' five runs. First-year pitcher Kelly Reid (Nantucket, Mass.) allowed 11 hits and six earned runs. She fanned six in suffering just her second loss out of eight decisions.

Husson rallied from a 3-2 deficit in game two, plating five runs in the bottom of the 3rd on their way to an 8-4 win. Victoria Overlock struck the key blow with a two-out double to score three runs.

The Eagles had 10 hits to overcome four errors in the nightcap. Shaw, Hill, and Becca McCarty joined Overlock as repeat hitters. Overlock scored three times.

McCarty earned the pitching win, allowing just two earned runs with two base on balls and four whiffs.

Senior Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) and sophomore Ali Stanley (Rochester, N.H.) each had a pair of hits for the Nor'easters. Senior Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt.) allowed 10 hits and three walks in taking the loss, striking out three along the way.

The Nor'easters have a key Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) set of doubleheaders this weekend, traveling to Rhode Island for Salve Regina University on Saturday (12 p.m.) and Roger Williams University on Sunday (9:30 a.m.).

Husson heads to Lyndon State College on Saturday for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader.
