CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- With two out and a runner on first, the University of New England manufactured three runs on four straight singles to come back and defeat Worcester State University, 7-6, concluding the Nor'easters' 10-game stint in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Thursday afternoon (Mar. 22) at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
The win was Big Blue's third straight, and UNE now stands at 6-4 on the season.
Junior
Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine), sophomore
Amanda Vaudreuil (Windham, N.H.), and first-year
Adrienne Chase (Holden, Mass.) kept things alive for the Nor'easters with two down in their last at-bat, before sophomore
Ali Stanley (Rochester, N.H.) drove in the game-winning run with a walk-off hit -- her second of the game.
Grover went 3-for-4 on the day and scored three runs, including a solo shot over the center field fence in the 5th. Vaudreuil and Chase joined Stanley with two hits each.
First-year
Kelly Reid (Nantucket, Mass.) entered the game to pitch in the top of the 6th facing a two-on, two-out situation along with a fresh 6-4 deficit. But after hitting the first batter she faced to load the bases, she proceeded the retire the next four (2 strike outs) to get the win.
For the Lancers (2-8), Erica Cordio and Alex Kerr hit home runs in the top of the 2nd as Worcester State built a 4-0 cushion. Cordio and Lauren Besozzi each had two hits in the contest.
UNE started to rally in the last half of the 4th. Following an RBI-single from junior
Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine), senior
Maegen Johnson (Standish, Maine) laced a double that scored two, making it 4-3. Grover's home run in the next inning tied things up.
Worcester State pitcher Katie Roy was saddled with the loss, striking out five. Her starting counterpart, UNE senior
Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt.), also fanned five in 5 2/3 of work.
The Nor'easters return to Maine for their home and Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener on Tuesday, when Gordon College visits Claude Dubois Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
