CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The University of New England softball team struck for four runs in the top of the 5th inning to pull away from a 2-2 game on its way to a 6-4 victory over Worcester State University in a non-conference game played at the Cape Coral Sports Complex Sunday afternoon (Mar. 18), as part of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Nor'easters (2-1) cracked five straight hits to start the frame (4 singles, then a double), and, after two outs, another double by Ali Stanley (Rochester, N.H.) drove in the sixth UNE run.

The Lancers (0-3) got a run back in both the 6th and 7th innings, but stranded two baserunners in each stanza to fall short of tying things up. Worcester State left 11 on the bases in the game.

First-year pitcher Kelly Reid (Nantucket, Mass.) began her season with a five strike-out complete game. She was charged with just one earned run after giving up 11 hits and a walk.

Senior Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine), junior Erin Grover (Biddeford, Maine), and first-year Gabrielle LaRoche (Deerfield, N.H.) had two hits apiece for Big Blue. Grover scored two of the team's runs in the game.

For Worcester State, Jaime Jacobs went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Erica Cordio also had three hits for the offense, and Hannah Everson took the loss for the Lancers while striking out four.
