Julie Bigelow (Montpelier, Vt.) scattered four hits and allowed one walk while striking out five to aid the University of New England in a 5-0 win over the University of Massachsetts Dartmouth in non-conference softball action Sunday afternoon (Mar. 18) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic, played at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
It was Bigelow's second win on the young season as the Nor'easters improve to 3-1 with the triumph.
UNE did most of its damage in the last half of the 2nd inning, which began with consecutive singles by first-year
Gabrielle LaRoche (Deerfield, N.H.), sophomore
Jessica Potter (Crown Point, N.Y.), and sophomore
Ali Stanley (Rochester, N.H.). First-year
Adrienne Chase (Holden, Mass.) and senior
Ashley Gott (Winterport, Maine) followed shortly thereafter with RBI singles as the margin reached 4-0.
Meanwhile, Bigelow was in the midst of retiring 13 straight UMD batters, which ended with a two-out single in the 5th -- the first of two hits in the game for the Corsairs' Kaitlin Hogan.
Chase and Gott each totaled two hits in the contest, and Chase drove in another run (Potter) in the 3rd inning to end the day with two RBI.
Becky Williams was charged with the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which saw its record even out at 1-1.
