Bates gets past UNE with balanced offense

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College connected of 50.8 percent (32 for 63) of its shot attempts to cruise to a 78-40 triumph over the University of New England men's basketball team in a non-conference contest Tuesday night (Dec. 4) at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Bobcats (3-4) had 11 players score in the game that ended a four-game losing streak, led by Billy Selmon with 17 points off the bench. Graham Safford added 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, and Ed Bogdanovich chipped in with 12 points. Selmon and Safford went a combined 7-for-8 from downtown in the match.

As a team, Bates made 10-of-21 tries from deep.

UNE (1-7) was paced by first-year Mitch Loeman (Freeport, Maine) in his first start of the season. He was the only Big Blue player in double figures with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, and pulled down six rebounds.

The Bobcats totaled a 46-34 advantage on the boards, and held the Nor'easters to 27 percent (16 for 59) on field goal tries in the contest.

After jumping out to a 7-0 cushion, Bates used a 16-3 spurt to build a 38-13 lead late in the first period.

The hosts led by no less than 22 points in the final 20 minutes.

UNE is off until January 2 when it heads up the road to face the University of Southern Maine.
