Babson hangs up six in second period for 6-3 win

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College scored six second-period goals -- four on the power play -- in a 6-3 ECAC Men's East victory over the University of New England in college ice hockey action Saturday (Dec. 1) afternoon at the Babson Skating Center.

Winners of four straight, Babson now stands at 4-2-2 overall, 3-2-1 in league play. The Nor'easters suffered their third straight defeat to drop to 2-8-0 (1-6 ECAC East).

After a quiet first period, Babson erupted in the second, putting up six on the scoreboard to seize control of the contest. Ryan Smith opened the scoring for the hosts at 2:24, then Jay Hasely, Mike Driscoll and Ben Kravitz each notched power-play markers over the ensuing nine minutes to give Babson a commanding 4-0 lead.

UNE broke the surge with goals from Cassidy April and Zach Lokey less than a minute later to get the visitors right back in the game.

Big Blue's momentum would be short-lived, however, as Babson struck two more times before the end of the pivotal second period. Smith notched his second marker of the contest -- and the Beavers' fourth power-play tally -- before Andrew Bonazza re-directed a shot from the point to give Babson a 6-2 cushion.

UNE's Jared Melman would knock home a power-play goal at 5:07 of the third to round the game's scoring.

Matt O'Neill, Ryan Heavey and Mike Vollmin each had a pair of assists for Babson, which led in shots on goal, 41-24, and converted 4 of 6 power-play opportunities. Rookie goaltender Jamie Murray stopped 21 shots to up his record to 4-1-1.

Starter Ian Edwards and reserve Craig Ryan each allowed three goals for the Nor'easters. Edwards had 26 saves in nearly 30 minutes of ice time, while Ryan recorded nine denials the rest of the way.

UNE is idle for more than a month before returning to action Jan. 5 versus Suffolk University.
