Box Score
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bates College first-year Karen Lockhart (East Grennwich, R.I.) scored off a feed from junior Julia Rafferty (Reading, Mass.) with 9:22 left, giving the Bobcats a 3-2 non-conference victory over the University of New England in women's soccer action Tuesday evening (Oct. 9) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The game-winner came just 25 seconds after UNE had tied things up (2-2), as Big Blue first-year
Jackie Dickerson (Windham, N.H.) curled a shot around the keeper from the left side and into the right side-netting. Senior
Lauren Blaisdell (Scarborough, Maine) assisted on the play.
Big Blue had trailed 2-0 before senior
Nicole Faircloth (Westfield, Mass.) got the hosts on the board in the 67th minute, launching a drive from barely inside midfield that took a large bounce in the center of the box and fit just between the goalie and crossbar.
Bates recorded the only goal of the opening half with just under seven minutes gone, as senior Sam Rose (Toronto, Ontario) took a pass from Rafferty on the left wing and placed low shot from the top of the box into the lower right corner.
The Bobcats held a 9-2 edge in shots during the first period, but could not build on the lead.
After nearly 15 minutes of the second frame, junior Jaimie Cappucci (Saugus, Mass.) was able to double the margin for the visitors, putting in a flick-header just off the near post on a corner kick sent in by senior Bud Arens (Weymouth, Mass.).
For the match, Bates totaled a 23-7 difference in shot attempts.
Junior Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) posted a pair of stops for the Bobcats (3-6-1), who return home to face Connecticut College in a NESCAC conference game Saturday morning (11 a.m.).
UNE juniors
Samantha Guyette (Newport, Vt.) and
Gina Iannazzi (Methuen, Mass.) split time in goal for the Nor'easters, making two and seven saves, respectively.
Big Blue (5-9-0) plays the third of its four-game homestand on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) against CCC-foe Nichols College.
